Metrical passage in Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons: Passage en vers chez Gertrude Stein
While reading Tender Buttons, I began to read a passage aloud, chosen haphazardly, and suddenly discovered that it seemed almost to scan, when read like a little children’s rhyme (rather more accentual than syllabic, at least taking into account the rather forced second line). No doubt it’s been noticed before, as I usually assume, but how lovely nonetheless!
Since accentual marks don’t seem to work properly with this blog interface, and probably don’t display correctly, I’ll use: ” ’ ” (for stressed) and “u” (for unstressed).

excellent vapor and tender butter,

all the splinter and the trunk,
‘u’uu’uu’ [or: ‘u’u’u’]
all the poisonous darkening drunk,

all the joyful tenderness,

En lisant Tendres boutons, je me suis mis à lire à haute voix un passage choisi au hasard, et j’ai découvert qu’une scansion assez régulière semblait possible, si on lisait le passage à la manière un peu martelée d’une chanson pour enfants. Sans doute on a déjà remarqué la régularité, étant donné les rimes, mais qu’est-ce que c’est splendide!
Je traduis pour le rythme surtout, en tentant de garder tout de même les mots de Stein. Puisque l’accentuation varie en français, et à cause de l’irrégularité du deuxième vers (qui provient de l’original), j’indique l’accentuation voulue (dans la mesure du possible).

exquises vapeurs et tendre beurre,

tout’ l’écharde avec la souche,

tout le méchant poivrot louche,
